The post I put out the other day about the chocolate bar that was ‘not for girls’ was a bit of a joke. It’s a real product on the shelves in the UK, and yes that’s how they market it. Do any girls eat them? I’m sure they do, some in protest, others because they just like the chocolate.
I’m returning to the topic of demographics as I’m currently writing this post, on the Blackberry, at an indie concert. I don’t remember the unfeasibly long name of the warm up band (edit: The Trachtenberg Family Slideshow Players, a very peculiar, interesting outfit) starting in 35 minutes, but the headliner is 20 year old English singer Kate Nash, who isn’t terribly well known over here, although this gig is sold out (about 1100 people according to the stage hand I just asked).
I was introduced to the music of Ms. Nash on my last trip to the UK, and I found myself enjoying her music, so when I found out that she was in town (DC) tonight I jumped on craigslist and located a couple of tickets.
Through a series of friends & family being too tired, having to work, or visit with their children, I ended up here on my own.
Arriving early, as I’d had to meet the gent I was buying the tickets from, it dawned on me as I walked up to join the queue that it was quite possible that I was going to be the oldest person there, and one of the few males. (Thankfully more people of ‘my generation’ and older started arriving as I waited for the doors to open, listening to those in front of me complain about the genetics paper they’d had to hand in that day).
Ok, so I’m out of my element, how does that apply to this blog? Well it could be:
- Demographic targeting is a best fit solution, you’re most likely not going to appeal to everyone in what you consider to be your target demographic, nor is your actual audience necessarily going to fit neatly into one particular bucket no matter how hard you try.
- When a user hits a landing page (the queue at the front of the club) if what’s presented to them doesn’t match what they expect they way just leave without a second thought, unless they’re motivated (a Yorkshireman having already spent money on a ticket is very motivated to not have it go to waste).
- Maybe I need to modify my listening habits? Nah, my eclectic music collection ranges from Kate Bush to Queen to Bjork to TMBG to Marilyn Manson to George Formby, so I’m good.

Thanks to all those that attended on Saturday, especially those that drove in from Richmond & Williamsburg. We had some great discussions, and the largest attendance to date, which unfortunately meant that we didn’t all get to talk to everyone, but I think we tried to talk to as many people as possible. We did do some round table discussions about various topics, and got to meet some new people.
So thanks again to those that attended, and we’ll hope to see you there the next time we have a meeting.

Is showing videos of Geckos in parliament a way of distracting the nation from current economic issues, is the Geico Gecko the real power behind the PM, or is it just that Bloglines messed up? I don’t find the last one amusing, so I’m of the opinion that it must be one of the other options…

Last week my 6 year old daughter came home from school all excited…
Daddy, Mr Buchheit (her school principal) kissed a pig today
Really?
Yes, her name was Daisy. Daddy, you have to go to Google…(thinks for a moment)… dot com and search for Daisy the Pig
So upstairs we went to the computer, and yep there at the top of the results for Daisy the Pig was Mr. Buchheit’s new friend Daisy the pot bellied reading Pig.
There are a couple of things that I like about this.
- This small business man was using his ranking to market himself. No need to tell the kids the URL of his site, instead just tell them to go to Google and type in the pig’s name.
- My daughter was excited about searching on the web for something that she was interested in, and there was the added bonus that she was going to find the result that she was looking for, because it was known to be there.
- My daughter now understands a little bit more of what I do for a living.

…and that’s about all I can say about it at this point. This is purely a tease piece. Well, ok, I can say that there are other SEO’s involved, and that my first post on the topic involves a Little Britain character. That should be vague enough
Tune in on Friday to find out what the heck this is all about, and why you should care…
Ok, you twisted my arm… you can find less details about this on SEO-Scoop

Just when you thought you’d seen everything, Search Engine Strategies announces that the last session of the first day of their upcoming SES-NYC show will be a ‘Super Session’ on ‘How to Train your Pets to Search’. This session is not restricted to just canine and feline owners, it’s also open to those who own birds, presumably to cover that whole Data Myna demographic. According to my source, the session is not open to fish owners, as evidence suggests that every 30 seconds they perform the same search over and over again (Note: there’s no proof to the rumors that MSN has seized on this knowledge to hire schools of fish to boost their share of the search market). My source informs me that the presentations currently being considered for this presentation are as follows:
- Search: Going beyond scents
- Finding the freshest catnip
- Pecking your way to the top of the rankings
- Using puppy dog eyes on Matt Cutts to avoid the spam filters
- ACME online, a case study in searching for roadrunner extermination devices
What should we expect to get out of this session? Well, we should find out whether there is any truth to the rumor that search is so easy that a trained monkey can do it.

Due to the unique nature of this session, it actually requires separate registration from regular SES-NYC, although there are benefits to registering for it before registering for the rest of the conference. So, if you’re thinking of going to SES-NYC, then go ahead and take a look at the “Search for Pets” session.
If this session is successful, I fully expect to see a session at SES-San Jose on Pet Blogging, most likely led by whom I expect to be the next star blogger on the Bruce Clay website - Jack Jack Barone (pictured up top)…
