Personalization and PPC

September 2nd, 2007

While doing a search to determine differences in SERPs due to personalization, I noticed that when I was logged in and receiving personalized results there were PPC ads displayed. When I logged out and performed the same search, no PPC ads.  At least there was the same number of organic results…

This is kind of peculiar. I am able to see PPC ads when I’m logged in and when I’m not.

Like you, when logged in, I also see only 4 ads - 4 ads that are completely different from your 4, but there could be a number of other possible explainations.

However, when logged out, one of these ads drops off - continually as I keep hitting the search button - 3, then 2, until just one ad remains. Again, day parting or daily budgets could be the culprit here, but one would assume that the ads would not vary so greatly from a logged in search to a logged out search.

I did try the search a few times from different browsers over the space of about 30 minutes, and the difference between the 2 was the same (the ads did move around and vary a little though)
